A Step-by-Step Guide to Airport Procedures for Electric Mobility Scooters

Traveling by plane can feel like a daunting process, especially when you rely on a mobility scooter to navigate the world. But with the dash 3 electric mobility scooter, getting from your front door to your destination is simpler than ever.

From airport check-ins to boarding and beyond, this guide covers every step to ensure a smooth journey with your scooter. Here’s the simple way to travel with your electric mobility scooter!

Preparing your electric mobility scooter for air travel

Flying with a mobility scooter starts with preparation. The dash 3 was designed with travel in mind, but it’s crucial that you understand the process, not just to simplify travel for all involved, but to stay updated with airline safety regulations.

Know the rules before you arrive

To begin, familiarize yourself with airline policies regarding mobility aids. Most airlines follow IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). The 2025–2026 guidance now requires passengers to receive operator approval in advance and to submit detailed information about their mobility device and battery configuration.

We recommend contacting your airline at least 48 hours in advance with:

  • Scooter weight and dimensions
  • Battery type and watt-hour rating
  • Whether the battery is installed or being carried separately

You should also be ready to confirm that the dash 3’s electrical circuits can be isolated, a requirement for battery-powered mobility aids carried in the cargo hold.

No need for a travel charger

Whether you're headed to Paris or Phuket, the charger that comes with your dash 3 is all you need. It’s built for international travel, with universal voltage compatibility ranging from 100V to 240V. That means it works across nearly every region in the world, just bring a simple plug adapter for the outlet style at your destination.

Most importantly, we strongly recommend using only the original dash 3 charger. Third-party chargers can damage your battery or compromise safety, and they’re just not worth the risk. Stick with what’s designed to work best.

Battery regulations

The dash 3’s standard 300Wh lithium-ion battery meets both FAA and IATA carry-on guidelines. You’re allowed to bring it onboard, either on its own or attached to the removable seat.

What’s changed?

The new IATA guidelines clarify:

  • Spare batteries must be hand-carried in the cabin (not checked), and
  • Installed batteries must have isolated terminals or be securely switched off

The dash 3 meets both of these conditions. It also has a clear “Approved for Air Travel” label to show airline staff.

Key standard battery specifications

  • Certification: UL2271 certified
  • Manufacturer: Samsung
  • Type: Lithium-ion
  • Voltage: 48V
  • Capacity: 280Wh, 46.8V x 6Ah, FAA approved

Key weight and dimensions, folded with the seat removed

  • H 17” (43 cm)
  • L 40.6” (104 cm)
  • W 23.6” (60 cm)
  • Weight 26 lbs (12.8 kg)

Battery regulations

The dash 3’s standard 300Wh lithium-ion battery meets airline standards for carry-on. You can bring it along in the cabin and store it under the seat or in the overhead bin. The battery itself has an approved for flight label, which can easily be shown to airline staff.

The dash 3 weighs 36 lbs with the battery removed and folds to a compact 41” x 34” x 24” for hassle-free storage.

Extra batteries

While the standard battery is perfect for travel, the dash 3’s long-range battery (500Wh) exceeds airline regulations and is better suited for at-home use. You may, however, bring an additional 300Wh standard battery on the plane with you.

Before leaving, ensure the battery is fully charged and securely attached or safely stored for transport.

Checking in with your dash 3

Checking in your dash 3 is straightforward, whether you’re stopping at the counter or heading straight to your gate. Airlines typically tag mobility scooters as assistive devices, ensuring they’re handled with care and exempt from additional fees.

If you’re checking luggage, visit the check-in counter to request a boarding tag for your scooter. This tag identifies it as a mobility aid, ensuring smooth handling by airport staff. For those traveling light, the same process can be completed at the gate.

Option 1: Check-in counter

When you arrive at the airport, proceed to the check-in counter if you’re traveling with checked luggage. Inform the airline staff that you’ll need a mobility aid boarding tag for your dash 3.

Be prepared to provide the following details:

  • Weight and dimensions: 42 lbs and 41” x 34” x 24”
  • Battery type: Lithium-ion
  • Battery wattage: 300Wh (removable)

Once tagged, you can ride your scooter to the security checkpoint and then to your gate.

Option 2: Gate check-in

For those traveling light, you can skip the main counter and check your scooter at the gate. Simply approach the gate agent, request a mobility tag, and ensure your dash 3 is labeled properly for storage.

Navigating airport security

Airport security can be a daunting task for any passenger, but when an electric mobility scooter is involved, it becomes an entirely different process. These simple steps make it easy.

Make security screening stress-free

Getting through security with the dash 3 is easier than you might expect. Ride your scooter to the security checkpoint and follow a few simple steps.

TSA and airport security may inspect your scooter and battery. Be ready to explain that your battery:

  • Is under the 300Wh limit
  • Is removable
  • Meets FAA and IATA air travel requirements

Prepare for inspection

They don’t usually ask you to remove the battery at security but don’t be surprised if they do. Just follow the security agent’s lead.

Walk through if able

If possible, step through the metal detector while your scooter undergoes inspection. Otherwise, TSA staff can assist you by providing you with a wheelchair.

Reassemble efficiently

Once cleared, reattach the battery and continue riding to your gate.

Airport staff are familiar with mobility aids, so keep calm and take advantage of their assistance if needed.

Boarding with your dash 3

At the gate, approach the airline staff to confirm the boarding process for your scooter. Most airlines will allow you to ride the scooter to the gate area, where it will be taken by staff for loading. Use these tips to ensure a smooth transition onto the plane.

Fold and secure your scooter

Fold the dash 3’s head tube and secure it with the included Velcro strap. This compact configuration simplifies handling for airline staff.

Remove the battery

FAA rules require passengers to carry lithium-ion batteries in the cabin. You have the option to just take the battery or take the entire dash 3 seat (with the battery attached) into the cabin. The dash 3 seat can be stowed in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

Communicate with the crew

Most airlines offer priority boarding for passengers with mobility needs, so don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Inform the crew that your dash 3 complies with FAA and IATA regulations for an even smoother experience.

Arriving at your destination

Upon landing, your dash 3 will usually be waiting for you at the gate. If it’s not immediately available, communicate with airline staff to ensure it’s promptly retrieved.

Once reunited:

  • Reattach the battery securely and verify the latch is properly fastened.
  • Ride off with the same ease and comfort that got you to the airport in the first place.
  • For frequent travelers, a custom travel bag for the dash 3 will soon be available, offering even more protection and convenience during flights.

Air travel with your electric mobility scooter doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. With the dash 3 electric mobility scooter, you can embrace the freedom to explore the world, one smooth ride at a time.
